PC Preventive Maintenance In my opinion, preventive maintenance is one of the most ignored aspects of PC ownership, . Most people seem to think that the Computer doesn't need preventive maintenance, and so you should just use it until it breaks, then repair or replace it. These people generally find themselves repairing or replacing much sooner than those that take definite steps to avoid difficulties in the first place. Here are some reasons why you should develop a preventive maintenance plan for your Computer: Preventive Maintenance Saves Money: I'm sure we've all heard the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". It's trite, but it is also true. Avoiding problems with your PC will save you money in the long run, compared with laying out cash for new components or repair jobs. Preventive Maintenance Saves Time: Saves time? How can taking two hours a month or whatever, to perform maintenance save time? Simple: because it saves you the much bigger hassles of dealing with system failures and data loss. Most preventive maintenance procedures are quite simple compared to troubleshooting and repair procedures--now those can really eat up your time at a fantastic rate. Preventive Maintenance Helps Safeguard Your Data: For most people, the data on the hard disk is more important than the hardware that houses it. Taking steps to protect this data therefore makes sense, and that is what PM is all about. Preventive Maintenance Improves Performance: Some parts of your system will actually degrade in performance over time, and preventive maintenance will help to improve the speed of your system in these respects. Let Expert Computer Services show you how to perform these simple maintenance tasks to keep your computer running in top form for years to come. Organize your PC desktop: 1. Have as few folders on your desktop as possible. Break them into main categories. I use my computer for personal and business, so I have 5 folder’s on my desktop. “Dave’s” all my personal files go in there. Dave’s Backup” for me to know what I want to back up each week. “Dave’s Quicken” you guessed it, for my bookkeeping files. “Julie’s Shortcut” a client’s folder that I want quick access to as I am currently working on a project for her. “WORK” my most important folder-my business folder. The rest of the tips will be how to break up your main category folders. 2. Put all the files on your desktop into one of your main categories-there should be NO FILES ON YOUR DESKTOP!!! Only folders. 3. Inside your desktop folders, break the items into categories, and create a folder for each category. Examples-Clients, Paperwork, Projects, Advertisement, Subcontractors-to name a few. 4. Then go through your main folder and put each file into the category they best fit. 5. Now, open up those category folders-do you still see a ton of files? Break them into subfolders. For example-Clients- Make a folder for each client so their information is easily accessible. 6. Still need to break it down-Take each clients folders, and create sub folders-paperwork, projects, invoices, etc. Continue with this process until every file belongs to a folder, and every folder is easy to navigate. The goal is when you open a folder-you know immediately what is in it. You will find that it is much easer to get to work because you are not distracted by all the items on your desktop, and when that client calls, you do not spend 5 minutes hunting for the file you need to answer his/her question. Take time to get one of the most important pieces of equipment in your office organized so that your office runs even more efficiently Finding a Computer Repair Service You Can Trust Your have a computer repair that needs to get done right away. You are ready to take it anywhere. Question is, where should you take it? Does it really matter where you take it? I would suggest that it does. Here are some things you may have not considered before. What kind of turn around time do they have? Some computer repair shops will take two to three weeks to return your computer to you. Are you ready to be without your computer for that long? If not, shop around. There are computer repair shops that can get your computer back to you in as little as a few hours. Some of these faster companies can charge more but the speed is worth it if you are working on a big project that has to get done right away. What do they charge for their hourly fee? Some companies charge really high fees and take a really long time to get the computer back to you. You want to take your repair to a computer repair shop that will be quick and will do the repair right the first time. Look for a computer repair shop that posts their prices. Most shops have a set price list for specific tasks. Look for a company that can give you a solid quote before they start their work. You should also make sure they will contact you for approval if there is any reason to increase their repair bill before they start the repair. Is their staff A+ certified? The A+ certification doesn't guarantee that the computer technician knows what he is doing but it is generally a good indicator that they have invested the time into their craft to do it well. You should also find out if everyone on staff is A+ certified or only certain staff. Ask to have the certified staff do the work. Trust your gut. If after talking with someone at the shop in person you don't get a good feeling about them, walk away. In any given town there are many people who do computer repairs. Don't be afraid of shopping around. Tips And Suggestions Install anti-virus software to prevent web browser-redirecting viruses. Install anti-pharming and anti-phishing software.
